Human Security researcher Barik Mhadeen is participating in the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies’ workshop on Mediterranean Dialogue on Regional Security (MDRS) in Berlin from 29 – 31 January 2019. He will address representatives from the German Federal Foreign Office, Federal Ministry of the Interior, Federal Ministry of Defence, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
As a panel speaker, he will highlight the WANA Institute’s Human Security and Countering Violent Extremism work, emphasising that security partnerships in the Mediterranean need to be thought of comprehensively and should consider a people-centric approach. This requires a redefinition of the role of the state and for local governance to play a critical role in ensuring regional security.
He will also discuss the WANA Institute’s research findings on drivers of violent extremism among youth, such as marginalisation, social injustice, and adverse consequences of state-centric policies. Youth, both male and female, must be integrated as indispensable stakeholders in security partnerships and youth participation in governance and policy-making as a whole should be encouraged. Barik will also refer to the Youth, Peace and Security work the WANA Institute has been part of through the Jordanian 2250 Coalition.
